Archaeological research at the ancient settlement of Yeha in northern Ethiopia has revealed advanced engineering capabilities in the region dating back to approximately 800 BCE. A joint study by the German Archaeological Institute and the Brandenburg University of Technology utilized numerical and mathematical modeling to analyze the Grat Be’al Gibri palace, a structure linked to the pre-Aksumite kingdom of Dʿmt.

The analysis indicates that the palace, which featured a square floor plan of roughly 60 by 60 meters, possessed the structural capacity to support up to 19 stories. Researchers determined that ancient builders achieved this stability through a sophisticated combination of carved stone, mud, and horizontal wooden beams placed within the walls to distribute mechanical stress and reinforce the masonry.

While the original building was destroyed by fire in antiquity, leaving only the lower levels and podium, the study demonstrates that societies in the Horn of Africa and South Arabia were capable of monumental, multi-story construction long before the industrial era.
