The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) is investigating the destruction of ancient structures at the El Pozito archaeological site in the Orange Walk District. Damage to Complex D and nearby structures was discovered during a routine inspection on August 17, 2026.

Senior Archaeologist Josue Ramos indicated that the damage likely resulted from the use of mechanized equipment, such as a bulldozer, as evidenced by tracks found at the scene. While the area has been monitored due to nearby land-clearing, NICH confirmed that no mining or quarrying permits have been issued for the site, leading officials to suspect local farming activities may be responsible.

The site is currently part of a research partnership between the Institute of Archaeology and the College of East Texas. NICH has requested public assistance in identifying those responsible, noting that the deliberate destruction of ancient monuments is a criminal offense punishable by fines of up to $75,000 and/or imprisonment for up to five years.
