Argentina continues to focus on strengthening its public health blood supply networks through infrastructure development and regional management. In Tucumán, the provincial government is resuming construction of a Regional Hemotherapy Center near the 107 Emergency Services facilities. This project, previously suspended due to the interruption of national government funding, will now be managed by the province to improve the availability and security of blood components through specialized laboratories.

In the City of Buenos Aires, the Ministry of Health is entering the final stages of constructing a 2,617-square-meter Regional Hemotherapy Center adjacent to Hospital Tornú. The four-level facility is designed to optimize the entire circuit of donation, processing, storage, and distribution, featuring specialized laboratories for immunohematology, serology, quality control, and molecular biology.

Regional donation trends remain inconsistent. In Entre Ríos, the Provincial Hemotherapy Program has expanded its reach by conducting 51 external collections across 7,000 kilometers and training approximately 1,000 teachers to foster community awareness.

Conversely, the La Plata Regional Hemotherapy Center in Buenos Aires province is facing a significant shortage. Following a 22% year-on-year decrease in September donors—recording 1,674 donors compared to 2,150 the previous year—the center is averaging only 64 donors per day, falling short of the 100 to 120 daily donors required to maintain reserves. Dr. Marcelo Salvarani, Hemotherapy coordinator for Sanitary Region III, attributed the decline to seasonal factors such as flu, allergies, and respiratory infections.

A particular scarcity of the O positive blood group has prompted authorities to reschedule non-urgent surgeries to preserve stocks for emergencies. While Laura González, director of the Hemotherapy Institute, noted the situation is not yet critical, she described it as an ‘important warning’ and urged the public to donate regularly.
