In mid-August 2026, reports emerged from the Jila District in Mimika Regency, Central Papua, regarding the alleged hostage-taking of civilians by an armed group. The perpetrators were identified as the TPNPB-OPM Kodap III Ndugama, following an attack on an Indonesian military post on August 17.

While initial reports cited nine victims, Brigadier General Vivin Alivianto, Commander of Korem 173/PVB, clarified that 11 women were initially taken. During the abduction, two women were shot, resulting in one fatality, and another woman was thrown into a ravine. One individual from the latter incident was successfully evacuated to a hospital in Timika. As of late August, nine women and young girls remain missing. The victims, members of the Amungme tribe, include children and a pregnant teenager.

By August 27, Mimika Police Chief AKBP Alredo Agustinus Rumbiak stated that investigations are ongoing but face challenges due to difficult geography and a lack of key witnesses. Frits Ramandey, a representative for Komnas HAM Papua, reported that video evidence has been obtained showing the nine victims with their hands tied, being escorted by three individuals carrying the Bintang Kejora flag.

Lt. Col. Jozanda, commander of the 1710/Mimika Military District, characterized the actions as ‘inhumane’. In response, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Damai Cartenz Task Force are conducting search and rescue operations. Due to the trauma of the incident, local residents have ceased farming, prompting the military to coordinate food assistance via helicopter drops.
