The Investigative Committee initiated criminal proceedings against Karapetyan and 35 others, alleging a scheme involving abuse of authority, money laundering, and embezzlement that caused approximately 64.6 billion AMD in damages to Electric Networks of Armenia. A court sentenced Karapetyan to one month of detention following his arrest. The legal actions have triggered political controversy. Davit Ghazaryan, a member of the Strong Armenia faction in the National Assembly, alleged that the arrest was politically motivated and intended to prevent a planned national unification meeting. Ghazaryan suggested the detention was a response to opposition questioning regarding peace treaty conditions and Azerbaijani demands, specifically concerning proposed changes to the Armenian Constitution. Critics have characterized the investigation as political persecution designed to pressure the opposition into supporting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s constitutional amendments. ## Timeline ### 2026-11-06: Armenian MP alleges Samvel Karapetyan arrest was politically motivated MP Davit Ghazaryan claims Samvel Karapetyan was arrested to suppress a national unification meeting and silence opposition to government peace negotiations. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/armenian-mp-alleges-samvel-karapetyan-arrest-was-politically-motivated ### 2026-11-04: Samvel Karapetyan detained amid Armenian financial investigation Billionaire opposition leader Samvel Karapetyan has been detained in Armenia amid allegations of causing $170 million in losses to the country's main electricity distributor. 16 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/armenia-investigative-committee-conducts-searches-at-residences-of-samvel-and-narek-karapetyan --- Cite as: Armenian investigation into Samvel Karapetyan.
