French tennis player Arthur Fils has reached the ATP top ten for the first time, ascending to a world number nine ranking. He is noted as the first French player to achieve a top-ten position since Gaël Monfils in 2020.

Despite this milestone, Fils faced an unusual situation at the ATP 500 Japan Open in Tokyo. Due to an administrative error involving a missed registration deadline, he was denied direct entry into the main draw. Fils explained that his team decided to enter the tournament following his US Open appearance, but the registration deadline had passed by “six to seven hours,” a situation he described as “one of his biggest challenges this year.”

After successfully navigating the qualifying stage by defeating Martin Damm and Kamil Majchrzak, Fils moved into the main draw and defeated compatriot Luca Van Assche 6-3, 6-2 in the first round. Following this victory, Fils is scheduled to face either Kei Nishikori or Frances Tiafoe in the second round.

Fils’s rise to the top ten follows a season characterized by significant physical setbacks, including hip and back injuries that caused him to miss Roland-Garros, though he secured titles in Barcelona and Cincinnati. His success comes as France maintains a strong presence in the ATP rankings, with 13 players currently in the Top 100.
