Aruba is addressing the challenges of its tourism-dependent economy, which is projected to represent approximately 78.6 percent of the island’s GDP in 2026. 

Parliamentarian Jennifer Arends-Reyes, President of the Tourism Commission, has advocated for a strategic shift toward sustainable tourism. She argued that the nation should prioritize nature protection, local community well-being, and quality of life over visitor volume, focusing on longer stays and increased local economic spending to mitigate infrastructure and labor market pressures.

In response to pressures on housing, infrastructure, and natural resources, officials have characterized the current situation as an overflow of a successful economic model—stemming from the transformation initiated after the 1985 oil refinery closure—rather than simple overtourism. 

Following the Aruba Global Travel Conference, the government has formalized a direction described by Minister of Tourism, Transport, and Labor Wendrick Cicilia as “more prosperity, less pressure.” This strategy aims to attract higher-value visitors to ensure economic benefits reach the local community while protecting the island's authenticity. Alongside these shifts, the government continues to work on modernizing border management through technological advancements in biometrics and digital identity to improve security and efficiency at the international airport.
