Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand are advancing regional economic integration through digital and trade initiatives. Officials from Malaysia and Singapore have held ministerial dialogues to boost intra-ASEAN trade and enhance business connectivity, specifically focusing on the implementation of the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA).

During the third annual ministerial dialogue between Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) and Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), officials discussed strategies to increase the share of intra-ASEAN trade, which currently accounts for between $800 billion and $900 billion of a $4.37 trillion regional trade volume. Additionally, Malaysia is positioning itself as a gateway for Indian companies under the ASEAN-India framework, seeking to expand cooperation in sustainable production, technology, and commodities such as rubber and timber.

In the financial sector, the central banks of Malaysia and Thailand have joined Singapore’s Bloom initiative. This public-private collaboration, which stands for ‘Borderless, Liquid, Open, Online, and Multi-currency’, aims to develop cross-border digital money standards to improve settlement speed and reduce costs. The initiative focuses on the acceptance, exchange, and settlement of regulated stablecoins and tokenized deposits to create interoperability and implement programmable controls like identity verification.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) confirmed that Bank Negara Malaysia and the Bank of Thailand have joined BLOOM as policymaker members. The expanded group includes participants such as Airwallex, Maybank, Nium, Ripple, ShopeePay, and the World Bank Group, the latter of which is expected to provide perspectives regarding the needs of developing economies. Work is focused on three primary areas: acceptance and settlement processes, interoperability between digital money networks, and programmable controls, including identity verification and sanctions screening.
