Astronomical research has recently focused on the identification and study of black holes through both deep-space observation and collaborative data analysis.

Using gravitational lensing and instruments like the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope, researchers identified two active supermassive black holes in the early universe within the MG B2016+112 system. Additionally, the James Webb Space Telescope identified a massive, highly organized galaxy cluster, XLSSC 122, located 10.4 billion light-years away, which appears to have formed much earlier than current cosmological models predict.

To address the vast number of undetected black holes in the Milky Way, the ‘Black Hole Hunters’ citizen science project was launched. This initiative invites volunteers to analyze NASA telescope data to find patterns where a black hole’s gravity acts as a ‘cosmic magnifying glass,’ helping to locate candidates for further professional investigation. While it is estimated that the Milky Way has produced over 10 million black holes during its 13-billion-year history, only 70 have been identified to date. Volunteers assist by sifting through data to identify gravitational lensing effects, which occur when a black hole orbiting a companion star bends and magnifies the star's light, causing it to appear briefly brighter.
