Astronomers have identified and analyzed the IRAS 07299-1651 binary star system, located approximately 5,300 light-years from Earth. Initial observations using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), the Very Large Telescope (VLT), and the James Webb Space Telescope revealed misaligned matter disks surrounding the protostars. This misalignment suggested the two stars did not originate from the same gas and dust cloud but joined during early development.

Subsequent research achieved the first 3D reconstruction of the orbit for IRAS 07299-1651. This study, which utilized data from the James Webb Space Telescope, ALMA, VLA, and the VLT, provided evidence that the two massive protostars likely formed independently before becoming gravitationally bound through a parabolic encounter.

In a related astronomical development, researchers also identified two young, low-density exoplanets, HD 114082 b and HD 114082 c, orbiting the star HD 114082. Located 311 light-years away, these massive planets are characterized by such low density that they could potentially float in water under terrestrial gravity.
