Scientific research into a mass grave discovered in 2016 at the Phaleron Cemetery near Athens has provided new insights into the identity of 79 men found buried in three rows with iron shackles. 

Using strontium isotope analysis on the tooth enamel of 66 individuals, researchers determined that approximately 97 percent of the men were local to the Attica region. These findings challenge earlier theories suggesting the remains belonged to foreign invaders or external military groups. 

The evidence indicates the deaths were likely the result of internal political or social conflicts, or perhaps judicial punishment, occurring within the local population during the Archaic period.
