Developments: 2. Athletic Club has experienced a period of instability characterized by scheduling disruptions and player injuries. The team faced a 28-day gap between matches following the postponement of a fixture against Levante due to storms and the abandonment of a match in Vallecas caused by crowd protests. During this period, the club also dealt with a significant soleus injury to Oihan Sancet, which was expected to sideline him for four weeks. Following this break, the club entered an intense schedule of five matches in 15 days. As the season progressed toward matchday nine, Athletic Club, under head coach Edin Terzic, sought to stabilize their position. The team entered a fixture against Valencia at Mestalla, a club that has struggled significantly this season with a winless run that prompted a managerial change, with Javier Aguirre now leading the team. Regarding the previously abandoned match at Vallecas, the RFEF Competition Judge has ruled that the fixture between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club will be resumed from the 24:16 mark. The match will be played behind closed doors, and Rayo Vallecano has been ordered to cover Athletic Club’s travel expenses for the rescheduled fixture. Recent reports confirm the suspended match is set to be replayed behind closed doors at Vallecas following the October 10 incident where fans threw objects onto the pitch in protest against club leadership. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-15: Atlético Madrid defeats Espanyol 1-0 behind late Alex Baena goal Alex Baena scored a late 89th-minute goal to lead Atlético Madrid to a 1-0 victory over Espanyol, extending their winning streak to six matches in La Liga. 79 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/valencia-and-athletic-club-face-off-in-la-liga-clash ### 2026-10-09: Athletic Club faces scheduling challenges and injury setbacks Athletic Club faces a congested schedule of five matches in 15 days following a 28-day break, while LaLiga allows major clubs to play on the same day to accommodate European competition schedules. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/athletic-club-faces-scheduling-challenges-and-injury-setbacks --- Cite as: Athletic Club La Liga season challenges.
