In August 2026, charter boat captain Damon Sacco and client Walter Chapman caught a massive Atlantic blue marlin approximately 100 miles off Cape Cod near the Atlantis Canyon. The fish weighed roughly 1,260 pounds (571.5 kg) and measured over 11 feet (3.35 meters) in length.

The catch involved a three-hour struggle that resulted in the marlin’s bill puncturing the side of the charter boat, Castafari. The specimen is noted for being remarkably large for New England waters, coming within approximately 142 pounds of the Atlantic blue marlin world record set in 1992. The catch is believed to be the largest ever recorded on the United States East Coast.

Marine scientists, including Walt Golet from the University of Maine, noted that such a large specimen is rare for the New England region due to seasonal water temperature requirements. While the body was processed for food, the head was sent to a laboratory to determine the fish's age, with experts speculating it may be between 25 and 30 years old.
