The Portuguese public broadcaster RTP has suspended certain disputed subsidies following a draft audit by the General Inspection of Finance (IGF). The audit, covering the period from 2018 to 2024, flagged hundreds of subsidy payments intended for talent retention as potentially improper. The controversy also includes scrutiny of board member remuneration.

RTP's Council of Administration has contested the preliminary findings, arguing the subsidies are based on long-standing company agreements and that the broadcaster's accounts undergo regular external audits. The suspension of these payments is being treated as a precautionary measure.

In response to the developing investigation, RTP's Independent General Council (CGI) has stated it is awaiting the final IGF report. The CGI noted it will withhold judgment on management responsibilities or necessary measures until the final report is submitted to the Minister of State and Finance.

Following the audit findings, RTP’s Board of Directors decided to preventively suspend nine specific subsidies identified as improper. These subsidies, established through service orders between 2005 and 2013 rather than the formal Company Agreement, affect approximately 339 employees, including many journalists.

Labor unions and the Workers' Commission issued a joint statement clarifying that roughly 80% of RTP staff are unaffected, noting that standard monthly allowances for meals, transport, seniority, and integration remain secure. Administration leader Nicolau Santos and union representatives are meeting to negotiate solutions, including a proposal to incorporate these subsidies into the Company Agreement. The dispute has caused concern among staff and the RTP Opinion Council, occurring alongside the selection process for a new Board of Directors.
