The 26th edition of the ‘Processo del 10 agosto’ (August 10 Trial) was held at Villa Torlonia in San Mauro Pascoli, Italy. Organized by the cultural association Sammauroindustria in collaboration with the local municipality, the mock trial examined whether the Italian Republic has fulfilled the promises made by its founding fathers since 1946.

The proceedings featured a structured debate between teams of university historians. The prosecution, led by Davide Conti and Marco Valbruzzi, argued that the Italian Constitution remains an ‘incomplete act.’ Conti cited delays in implementing constitutional mandates—such as the 1956 establishment of the Constitutional Court and the 1978 creation of the national health service—and argued that the lack of a formal process against fascism allowed a culture of violence to persist.

In defense, Roberto Balzani and Maurizio Ridolfi argued that the Republic was a necessary tool to dismantle tyranny following the fall of the monarchy and the fascist regime, noting the complexity of transitioning a country that had endured two decades of dictatorship. 

Following the debate, an audience of over 700 people delivered a verdict using voting paddles. The Italian Republic was found ‘guilty’ of failing to fulfill its founding promises, with a final tally of 323 votes for condemnation, 282 for acquittal, and 79 abstentions.
