Australian selectors decided to retain Marnus Labuschagne for the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town, despite his recent difficulty in converting starts into large scores. Chief selector George Bailey noted that Labuschagne’s ability to absorb pressure against the new ball justifies his inclusion, even as captain Pat Cummins observed that his recent scores have been insufficient to win matches.

Following this decision, Labuschagne faced increased scrutiny after being dismissed for a duck by South African off-spinner Simon Harmer during the second day of the series decider. While other Australian batsmen such as Matthew Renshaw, Cameron Green, and Josh Inglis contributed to a strong total, Labuschagne’s performance has reignited debates regarding whether the player requires a break from Test cricket. His future position in the team, particularly for the upcoming home series against New Zealand, remains under pressure.
