The Australian government’s proposed free-trade agreement with the European Union continues to face political friction, primarily from the Coalition and agricultural lobby groups. While the dispute has historically centered on red meat market access, new details indicate the deal would also involve Australia removing a 5% tariff on various European imports, such as cars, fashion, and food, while the EU would remove tariffs on Australian dairy, manufactured items, and critical minerals. Notably, the agreement would provide Australia with tariff-free access to sell 35,000 tonnes of beef to the EU.

Internal division persists within the Coalition. Nationals leader Matt Canavan has declared opposition to the deal, whereas Liberal treasury spokesman Tim Wilson noted that a formal stance has not been settled as the legislation has not yet reached Parliament. Trade Minister Don Farrell has criticized this opposition, suggesting that defeating the agreement would constitute an “act of economic self harm.”

In contrast, various industry bodies are calling for the agreement's passage to bolster export sectors. The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) stated the deal would permanently remove all tariffs on Australian energy and resource exports, including lithium hydroxide, which currently faces tariffs of up to 5.3 per cent. Additionally, the MCA noted the agreement would raise foreign investment screening thresholds for private EU investors. The vegetable industry body Ausveg has also backed the deal, emphasizing that tariff elimination is critical for growers, particularly onion producers, to regain competitiveness in the European market.
