The Australian Ministry of Defence announced it will retire its fleet of 22 Tigre ARH (Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter) aircraft by the end of 2026, accelerating a previously planned withdrawal. The decision is attributed to the aircraft reaching the end of their 20-year lifespan and changing battlefield conditions, specifically the increased vulnerability of manned reconnaissance helicopters to modern anti-aircraft defenses and drones. Australia intends to replace the Tigre fleet with 29 Boeing AH-64E Apache helicopters, which the military describes as a ‘new generation’ platform. In a related development, Ukraine has declined an Australian proposal to receive the 22 Eurocopter Tiger combat helicopters. Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia Vasyl Mirosnichenko noted that the request was withdrawn due to logistical and technical challenges, including high flight costs, difficulty sourcing spare parts, and complexities regarding the integration of American equipment into the Australian Tiger variant. The decision indicates a preference for platforms more compatible with Ukraine’s existing industrial support networks in Europe. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-30: Ukraine declines Australian offer of Tiger combat helicopters Ukraine has declined Australia's offer of 22 Tiger combat helicopters, citing high maintenance costs, spare part availability, and technical complexities. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/ukraine-declines-australian-offer-of-tiger-combat-helicopters ### 2026-09-25: Australia to retire Tigre helicopters by 2026 Australia will retire its 22 Airbus Tigre helicopters by late 2026, replacing them with 29 Boeing AH-64E Apaches to better address modern drone and anti-aircraft threats. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/australia-to-retire-tigre-helicopters-by-2026 --- Cite as: Australia Tiger helicopter retirement and transfer.
