Researchers from the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales have developed “paraborgs,” bio-hybrid robots using the giant burrowing cockroach (Macropanesthia rhinoceros) to assist in disaster search and rescue operations.

The technology involves attaching electrodes to the insects' antennae or nervous systems, allowing researchers to guide them via electrical signals. Two specialized versions have been developed: one equipped with a camera to locate victims in tight spaces, and another featuring a compact injection system to deliver medication to survivors in inaccessible areas.

Initial testing demonstrated that the cockroaches can navigate irregular terrain and carry loads up to 1.5 times their own weight. In trials, an “observer” cockroach reached designated control points with a 100% success rate. The injection-equipped cockroach achieved a 72% success rate in medicine delivery, which increased to 95% when the injection was triggered within 15 centimeters of the target. Further research is required to address communication stability and movement within complex debris before real-world deployment.
