Sources: 5. Developments: 2. The Australian Federal Government has launched a public consultation regarding the future of free-to-air television delivery. The initiative, introduced by Communications Minister Anika Wells, utilizes a discussion paper titled ‘Technology scenarios for free-to-air television’ to explore long-term technological paths. The consultation aims to address the balance between broadcast and online delivery, spectrum usage, and necessary sector investment. Industry representatives, including Free TV Australia, have expressed support for the process, emphasizing the need to protect universal access for the 20 million weekly viewers, particularly those in regional and remote areas. As viewing habits shift toward internet streaming, concerns have emerged regarding the accessibility of basic channels for older populations and the reliability of broadcast media for emergency communications during natural disasters like floods or fires. While some consumers are transitioning to streaming via hardware such as dongles, the shift presents various technical and financial challenges. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-27: Australia consults on future of free-to-air television Australia is consulting on the future of free-to-air TV as streaming shifts viewing habits, raising concerns over accessibility and emergency communications. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/australia-consults-on-future-of-free-to-air-television ### 2026-09-15: Free TV Australia welcomes government consultation on television future Free TV Australia welcomes a government consultation on the future of free-to-air television, focusing on technology scenarios, spectrum, and the balance between broadcast and online delivery. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/free-tv-australia-welcomes-government-consultation-on-television-future --- Cite as: Australian free-to-air television policy consultation.
