Meat Standards Australia (MSA) introduced a new entry pathway that allows cattle to remain in transport for up to 120 hours while maintaining MSA eligibility. This initiative, following a seven-year investigation, aims to integrate northern cattle production systems from the Northern Territory, northern South Australia, and potentially northern Western Australia and western Queensland into premium markets. Complementing these market shifts, Australian skills ministers endorsed the TLISS00242 Livestock Transport Driver Skill Set. Developed by Industry Skills Australia in collaboration with the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association, this nationally recognized training program establishes standardized competencies for livestock truck drivers. The curriculum focuses on animal care during transit, livestock handling, heavy vehicle driving behaviors, and work health and safety to improve industry benchmarks and animal welfare. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-21: Australia endorses new national livestock transport training Australian ministers have endorsed a new national training skillset for livestock transport drivers to improve animal welfare and standardize specialist skills across the industry. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/australia-endorses-new-national-livestock-transport-training ### 2026-09-22: Meat Standards Australia expands market access for northern beef producers A new Meat Standards Australia transport pathway allows cattle to be in transit for up to 120 hours, opening premium market access to remote beef producers in northern Australia. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/meat-standards-australia-expands-market-access-for-northern-beef-producers --- Cite as: Australian livestock industry developments.
