Alpine regions in Austria are preparing for the 2026/27 winter season. Areas including Millstätter See, Bad Kleinkirchheim, and the Nockberge are set to offer approximately 200 kilometers of slopes across five ski areas. Highlights for the upcoming season include the Winter Opening Weeks in Bad Kleinkirchheim and new family-oriented outdoor facilities at Turracher Höhe.

However, the season faces local setbacks as the Gaißau-Hintersee family ski area near Salzburg faces permanent closure. Following three bankruptcies and unsuccessful modernization efforts, owners have applied to dismantle all lifts. The resort's operations became impossible after negotiations with a local landowner regarding valley access and parking collapsed, leaving the central chairlift inoperable.
