Austrian household financial assets have surpassed the one trillion euro threshold for the first time, reaching 1,011 billion euros as of the second quarter of 2026. This marks a 7 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Bank deposits constitute the largest portion of these assets at 34 percent, followed by business participations and securities, which each account for 24 percent. Data indicates that the share of securities and funds within household wealth has more than doubled over the last decade.

Despite the increase in total wealth, distribution remains highly concentrated, with the top ten percent of the population holding 70 percent of assets. OeNB Vice-Governor Edeltraud Stiftinger noted that wealth distribution remains uneven and many individuals lack the capacity to save or invest.

The household savings rate, which stood at 9.7 percent in 2025, is projected to decrease further to 8.4 percent in 2026 due to factors such as geopolitical uncertainty, weak economic performance, and rising consumption.
