Lieutenant General Harald Vodosek has been appointed as the new Chief of the General Staff of the Austrian Armed Forces, succeeding Rudolf Striedinger. Vodosek, who previously served as the director of procurement, was selected following a process involving six applicants.

Upon assuming command, Vodosek faces significant challenges, including a projected 12.7 billion euro financing gap in national defense and critical procurement decisions regarding drone defense systems, medium-range air defense, and the successor to the Eurofighter fleet.

Vodosek has expressed support for recent military service reforms that extend compulsory service to “6 plus 3 months,” describing the move as an “ultimate and maximal gain for the security of the Republic of Austria.”
