Austria’s tourism sector has demonstrated growth in overnight stays during the 2026 summer season, despite facing economic challenges. Statistics Austria reported 41.87 million overnight stays between May and July, representing a 3.2 percent increase from the previous year, largely fueled by international visitors from Germany. While the industry faces pressure from high energy and labor costs, specific regions have seen notable successes. In Styria, tourism from Italy rose by 36.2 percent, driven by culinary-focused marketing and anticipated improvements in accessibility via the Koralm Railway. 

Lower Austria has also reported significant activity. Following a recovery in July with 829,700 overnight stays, the region saw record usage of the Niederösterreich-CARD during the summer of 2026. In July and August alone, the card was used approximately 630,000 times, surpassing the previous record set in 2025. Popular destinations for cardholders included outdoor swimming pools, mountain railways, and regions such as the Wiener Alpen and Mostviertel.

As the industry transitions toward the colder months, regional pass programs are being utilized to drive winter tourism. The NÖ Bergerlebnispass, entering its third season in 2026/27, provides access to ten different winter sports areas. To encourage family participation, a special bonus is available through a super-pre-sale ending October 31, offering free skiing for children under 11 with one adult pass, or for children up to age 15 with two adult passes.
