The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has reported a decline in avian influenza A(H5) outbreaks among animals in the Americas during the first half of 2026. Between January 1 and July 15, 2026, ten countries recorded 455 outbreaks, including 386 in birds and 69 in mammals. This constitutes a 25.7% reduction compared to the 612 outbreaks recorded during the same period in 2025.

The most significant decrease occurred in mammals, where cases dropped by approximately 65% from 196 in 2025 to 69 in 2026. Geographically, the United States reported the highest number of episodes with 301, followed by Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Canada.

While no human cases of A(H5) have been reported in the Americas in 2026, health authorities emphasize the need for continued vigilance and strict surveillance in both animal and human populations. The last recorded human infection in the region occurred in November 2025.
