Authorities in Baja California have suspended in-person classes across all public education levels due to an extreme heat wave. Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda announced that students will transition to remote learning from the afternoon of September 9 through September 11 to protect student health.

Meteorological forecasts predict temperatures exceeding 46 degrees Celsius in regions such as Mexicali, with some areas potentially reaching 50 degrees. The Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) reported that extreme heat has already been linked to 56 heat-related deaths in the state this year.

While public schools move to distance learning, private institutions are responsible for determining their own academic modalities. In response to the heat, the state has activated municipal and state shelters in Mexicali and provided hydration points to mitigate risks of dehydration and heatstroke.
