In Pljevlja, producers experienced highly inconsistent yields due to unpredictable weather patterns. While some areas maintained stable production, others faced catastrophic seasons. The president of the Matica Beekeeping Association, Žarko Dragašević, noted that climate change has shifted the end of the honey season earlier by 15 to 20 days. In Prilep, North Macedonia, the situation appears more severe, with local beekeepers describing the current year as the worst production period in 50 years. Factors such as climate change, reduced forage, and wildfires have impacted the industry, with some colonies producing zero kilograms. Dejan Boškoski, president of the ‘Brotherhood’ beekeeping association, highlighted concerns regarding bee survival and the presence of counterfeit honey on social media. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-08: Prilep beekeepers report worst honey production in 50 years Beekeepers in Prilep, North Macedonia, report the worst honey production in 50 years due to climate change, wildfires, and reduced forage, threatening the survival of bee colonies. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/prilep-beekeepers-report-worst-honey-production-in-50-years ### 2026-09-13: Pljevlja beekeepers face unpredictable yields due to climate change Beekeepers in Pljevlja face highly unpredictable honey yields due to climate change, with record production in some areas contrasting with catastrophic losses in others. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/pljevlja-beekeepers-face-unpredictable-yields-due-to-climate-change --- Cite as: Balkan beekeeping industry facing climate challenges.
