Recent credit assessments for Balkan nations indicate positive economic trends and structural progress.

In North Macedonia, Fitch Ratings affirmed the country’s ‘BB+’ credit rating with a stable outlook, noting 4.3% real economic growth in the second quarter of 2026. This growth was supported by construction, manufacturing, and a 40% year-on-year increase in capital expenditures for infrastructure projects. While the agency noted the need for fiscal consolidation to manage debt and budget deficits, the government maintains that the rating validates its economic policies.

Similarly, Moody’s upgraded Albania’s credit outlook from ‘stable’ to ‘positive’ while maintaining its Ba3 rating. The agency highlighted strengthening public finances, progress in structural reforms, and projected GDP growth of 3.6% in 2026 and 3.5% in 2027. While public debt is expected to decrease toward 50.2% of GDP by 2027, Moody’s warned that rapid increases in housing prices and banking sector exposure to real estate pose risks to financial stability.

On the diplomatic front, Albanian Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi and EU Ambassador Sofia Moreira de Sousa emphasized that achieving the 2030 EU membership goal requires a shift from passing laws to effective implementation and comprehensive reforms. Domestic challenges also persist regarding the cost of living, as food prices reached 103% of the EU average in 2025. Additionally, Albania continues to engage in security cooperation, with the FBI set to meet with Albanian security structures in 2026 during the 42nd FBINAA European Chapter meeting in Tirana to address organized crime, terrorism, and cybercrime.
