Addressing approximately 10,000 attendees, Obama spoke on leadership, resilience, and impact, emphasizing the necessity for leaders to recognize a ‘common humanity’ and criticizing political nostalgia for a ‘real America’ that excludes diverse voices. During his visit, Obama held an informal meeting with Portuguese President António José Seguro at the Belém Palace to discuss international affairs. He also addressed the emerging risks of artificial intelligence, warning that the technology could transform labor markets and pose security threats to the aviation and financial sectors. He noted that the U.S. and China must coordinate safety measures despite mutual distrust. The visit, which included a reception in Cascais from Mayor Nuno Piteira Lopes, occurs less than a month before the November 3 U.S. midterm elections. Obama is expected to support Democratic campaigns later this month, including a scheduled appearance in Michigan to support Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-09: Barack Obama visits Lisbon for Game Changers Forum Former US President Barack Obama visited Lisbon for the Game Changers Forum, discussing leadership, democracy, and the need for international cooperation on AI regulation ahead of the US midterm elections. 20 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/barack-obama-visits-lisbon-for-game-changers-forum ### 2026-10-05: Barack Obama to speak at Game Changers Forum 2026 in Lisbon Former U.S. President Barack Obama will speak at the Game Changers Forum 2026 in Lisbon, focusing on leadership and international challenges. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/barack-obama-to-speak-at-game-changers-forum-2026-in-lisbon --- Cite as: Barack Obama visits Lisbon for Game Changers Forum.
