Hungarian striker Barnabás Varga has become a key figure for AEK Athens following his transfer from Ferencváros. During a UEFA Champions League group stage match against Manchester City, Varga returned to the starting lineup after recovering from a hamstring injury. Although Manchester City secured a 3-1 victory, Varga’s presence was noted during the match.

Greek media have since praised Varga, describing him as a “benchmark for future transfers” due to his impact of 15 goals and 2 assists in 33 appearances. While AEK Athens recently suffered a 3-1 defeat against PAOK in the Greek Cup, Varga remained on the bench as the club prepares for upcoming fixtures against Panathinaikos and Real Madrid.

Following his January transfer, which cost approximately five million euros, Varga has established himself as a central figure under manager Marko Nikolics. He is now viewed as a model for the club’s future recruitment strategy. As AEK Athens focuses on improving its competitive standing and away form, Nikolics is expected to start both Varga and fellow Hungarian midfielder Milán Vitális in the upcoming derby against Panathinaikos.
