On October 9, 2026, a section of plaster fell from a classroom ceiling at the Basilika Gymnasium in Thessaloniki, causing minor injuries to a 14-year-old student. While initial inspections by the Municipality of Thermi found no visible structural decay or cracks in the affected art classroom, localized moisture was noted in some areas outside the rooms.

The school was initially closed for distance learning to allow for investigations. As the situation progressed, the municipality decided to strip the plaster from all classrooms and corridors as a precautionary measure to prevent further incidents. The facility is expected to undergo restoration and safety inspections, with a planned reopening on November 2.
