Recent detections of the rabies virus (Lyssavirus) in bat populations have been reported in different German regions. In Rheinland-Pfalz, the virus was identified in a deceased pipistrelle bat, marking the first confirmed case in that district since 2010.

In Bavaria, the virus was detected in a bat in Würzburg, which authorities noted followed two positive tests in broad-winged bats found in the nearby Aschaffenburg district in June. 

Health authorities in both regions maintain that the infection risk to the general public remains low, as these animals typically avoid human contact. However, officials advise residents to avoid touching bats that appear weakened, injured, or exhibit atypical behavior, such as disorientation or paralysis. In the event of a bite or scratch, immediate medical advice is recommended.
