Battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity in Latin America and the Caribbean has seen significant growth, doubling from 1,683 megawatts (MW) in 2025 to 3,408 MW by August 2026, according to the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE).

Chile remains the regional leader, holding approximately two-thirds of the total capacity with 2,291 MW in operation. When accounting for projects currently in construction or testing, Chile’s total capacity reaches approximately 9.6 gigawatts (GW). ACERA projects that this storage capacity could exceed 10 GW by 2028 as the country scales infrastructure to improve grid flexibility and prevent energy waste, particularly as solar and wind provided over 42% of generation in 2025.

Other regional activity includes Mexico planning 2,216 MW by 2030, Argentina awarding over 1,400 MW through competitive mechanisms, and ongoing developments in Honduras and Jamaica to improve grid reliability and renewable integration.
