London is holding various events to mark the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street, a 1936 confrontation where residents and the Jewish community blocked a march by Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists.

Initial commemorations included a musical event in Shoreditch to raise funds for striking workers and plans for a unity parade in Tower Hamlets. An exhibition titled ‘Solidarity On The Streets’ opened at Four Corners in Bethnal Green to document the history of anti-fascist resistance in London’s East End. The exhibition details how the 1936 event contributed to the passage of the Public Order Act and notes the historical connections between local protesters and the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War.

On October 4, thousands of demonstrators marched through East London to commemorate the anniversary. The march included trade unions such as Unite, alongside various anti-racism and pro-Palestinian campaign groups. Protesters carried banners with slogans including “They shall not pass” and messages opposing antisemitism, Islamophobia, and racism.

During the commemorations, speakers addressed the crowd at St George’s Gardens. Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman spoke on the anniversary serving as a reminder of resistance against fascism, while former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn criticized anti-migrant rhetoric, stating that anti-racism requires opposing all forms of racism.
