Bay laurel is being utilized in various domestic folk traditions and symbolic rituals. Drawing on historical associations with victory and success, some customs involve placing dried leaves under living room rugs to foster household harmony, prevent disputes, and attract financial prosperity.

Additionally, some practices suggest placing bay leaves under a mattress to improve sleep quality and reduce stress. Proponents suggest these leaves may also help purify the air due to their antiseptic and antifungal properties, which could potentially assist individuals with respiratory concerns or allergies.

Expanding on these traditions, Mediterranean and Latin American cultures often place a laurel leaf under a pillow. Historical roots of these practices trace back to Ancient Greece, where the laurel was associated with Apollo and used by the Pythies of Delphi to achieve “altered states of consciousness,” as well as to Roman traditions where laurel crowns symbolized victory and wisdom.
