Weather systems in the Bay of Bengal have prompted maritime and coastal warnings in Sri Lanka and India. Initial advisories focused on hazardous maritime conditions, with Sri Lankan authorities warning fishermen of strong winds and rough seas, while Indian officials monitored a low-pressure area near Odisha. By August 10, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the north Bay of Bengal for August 13, following a cyclonic circulation near the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts. This led to a yellow warning for 21 districts in Odisha, with expectations of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph. Cities such as Bhubaneswar and Cuttack faced risks of waterlogging and flooding. As of August 12, the situation has escalated. The IMD issued a red alert for Odisha as the low-pressure area intensified into a well-marked system, expected to concentrate into a depression and move northwestward across the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh. Extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall has already been recorded, including 236 mm in Balasore, Bhograi. Red alerts for extremely heavy rainfall were issued for Baleshwar, Bhadrak, and Kendujhar. The weather system is also expected to impact Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. Fishermen have been advised to avoid the North Bay of Bengal and the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh until August 14. Severe flooding has since been reported as rivers including the Baitarani, Jalaka, and Budhabalanga crossed danger levels, inundating residential areas and major roads. In Kendhujhar, embankment breaches have caused flooding across several blocks, while Baleshwar has experienced significant waterlogging in towns and railway stations.
