The film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann, is marking its 30th anniversary since its 1996 release. The production, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, reimagined the classic tragedy within a contemporary urban setting defined by gang rivalries and a maximalist aesthetic.

While the film utilized locations in Mexico, such as Mexico City and Veracruz, it maintained Shakespeare’s original Elizabethan verse alongside modern elements like hip-hop influences and car chases. Despite receiving initial criticism for its loud visual style, the film was a commercial success, grossing over 147 million dollars. It is now recognized as a cultural tool for making Shakespeare accessible to younger audiences.

In reflections on the production, Claire Danes noted that while she had a brief crush on DiCaprio during filming, the two had little in common off-camera. She described DiCaprio as “immature” due to his pranks, while he reportedly viewed her as too serious.
