The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) is expanding its Interoperable Instant Payment System (PI-SPI) platform across the eight countries of the West African Monetary Union (UMOA). As of July 31, 2026, 104 institutions have been authorized to offer 24/7 instant money transfers through the system.

Senegal has emerged as the regional leader in adoption with 24 authorized institutions, including 17 banks, two electronic money issuers, one payment institution, and four microfinance institutions. Côte d’Ivoire follows closely with 23 participants. Other participating nations include Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo, Niger, and Guinea-Bissau.

The PI-SPI infrastructure is designed to facilitate seamless transactions between diverse financial networks, such as transferring funds between traditional bank accounts, microfinance institutions, and mobile money wallets.
