On 29 June 2026, the Bank of the Central African States (BEAC) implemented monetary easing by cutting its policy auction rate from 4.75% to 4.50% and reducing the marginal lending facility rate from 6.25% to 5.75%. The central bank also lowered reserve-requirement ratios for demand deposits to 6.5% and term deposits to 4.0% to stimulate credit growth and business investment across the six-member CEMAC zone.

Following the announcement, commercial banks rapidly increased liquidity requests. By 14 July, banks sought CFA 535.5 billion, resulting in a shortfall against the CFA 500 billion made available by the BEAC. By 26 July, demand reached a record CFA 680 billion, a 27% increase from the previous week. While the easing aimed to lower borrowing costs, the weighted-average refinancing cost rose to 4.79% on 14 July due to strong competition for liquidity.

To address sustained refinancing demands, the BEAC conducted two major auctions on 11 and 18 August 2026, injecting approximately $2.3 billion into the CEMAC banking system. This move marks a shift from the restrictive policies maintained since 2021. Analysts note that while liquidity is increasing, it remains to be seen if these resources will effectively reach private-sector borrowers or drive economic transformation, given regional challenges in market depth and savings mobilization.
