Developments: 2. Dancehall artist Beenie Man sparked a debate regarding the historical origins of Caribbean Carnival after claiming in an interview that Jamaica began the celebrations before Trinidad and Tobago. He credited the late musician Byron Lee with pioneering Jamaican festivities approximately 60 years ago. Historical records indicate that the National Carnival Commission of Trinidad and Tobago traces its celebrations back to 1783. Following the emancipation of enslaved Africans in the 1830s, these festivities integrated African cultural expressions like Canboulay traditions to form the modern institution. Following backlash, Beenie Man released a video message to clarify his remarks. He stated his comments were intended to describe his personal experience with Jamaican traditions, such as road marches and large music trucks, rather than to challenge the historical timeline of Trinidad and Tobago. He emphasized his affection for the country, stating, “I don’t speak with Trinidad with hate, I love Trinidad.” While acknowledging that Trinidad’s traditions began much earlier, he did not issue a full retraction of his original claims, focusing instead on the specific cultural influence of Byron Lee in Jamaica. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-24: Beenie Man clarifies remarks regarding Carnival origins Dancehall artist Beenie Man issued a video clarification following criticism that he misstated the historical origins of Carnival in relation to Trinidad and Tobago. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/beenie-man-clarifies-remarks-regarding-carnival-origins ### 2026-10-21: Beenie Man claims Jamaica predates Trinidad in Carnival origins Dancehall star Beenie Man claimed Jamaica started Carnival before Trinidad and Tobago, citing Byron Lee, though historical records trace Trinidad's Carnival back to 1783. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/beenie-man-claims-jamaica-predates-trinidad-in-carnival-origins --- Cite as: Beenie Man Carnival origins controversy.
