In August 2026, several Belgian municipalities and the social housing company Dijledal implemented a right of first refusal policy in village centers such as Oud-Heverlee, Sint Joris Weert, Blanden, and Haasrode. 

Effective August 1, 2026, the regulation allows the municipality or Dijledal to purchase property or building land at the same price and conditions agreed upon by a third-party buyer. This measure is intended to strengthen local housing policy and increase the availability of affordable homes by allowing local government intervention in the market. 

Certain exceptions apply to the policy, including sales to children or grandchildren, inheritances, gifts, first-time home purchases, and specific types of shared ownership or individual plots within larger subdivisions.
