In early August 2026, Belize Telemedia Limited’s board approved an $80 million purchase of Speednet Communications, merging the country’s two largest mobile operators, Digi and Smart. Labor groups and the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) immediately demanded greater transparency and public consultation, staging protests outside BTL’s headquarters. The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) confirmed it would conduct a formal review under the Telecommunications Act to assess market fairness and consumer protection.

Political opposition intensified on 6 August when opposition and independent senators staged a walkout of the Belize Senate. Senator Patrick Faber accused the government and BTL of trying to “hoodwink” Belizeans, while the United Democratic Party (UDP), led by Tracy Panton, warned the deal could create a monopoly.

By mid-August, the Belize Cabinet began deliberating on the proposal in Belmopan. While Prime Minister John Briceño stated the Cabinet had not yet voted, a statutory instrument was passed to freeze prices until December 2028. However, the BCCI and the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) declined Cabinet invitations to discuss the transaction, insisting on the inclusion of the National Evangelical Association of Belize and the Belize Network of NGOs.

On 19 August, the NTUCB escalated its opposition by demanding the immediate removal of BTL Chairman Mark Lizarraga and several board members. NTUCB President Ella Waight stated the leadership had lost the confidence of workers due to a lack of honesty and transparency. The unions further proposed that any future BTL board adopt a tripartite structure involving the government, labor, and the business community.
