Ben Whittaker successfully defended his WBC Silver light heavyweight title and secured a mandatory position for the IBF title by defeating Conor Wallace via unanimous decision at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena. The judges scored the bout 117-111, 116-112, and 115-113.

Whittaker controlled the majority of the twelve-round bout, utilizing his movement and jab to dominate the first nine rounds. However, the fight shifted dramatically in the tenth round when Wallace landed heavy shots that visibly hurt Whittaker. In the final twelfth round, Whittaker struggled to stay upright, falling to the canvas three times, though the referee did not record official knockdowns.

Whittaker’s trainer, Andy Lee, revealed that the fighter had been battling COVID-19 the week prior to the match. Whittaker attributed his late-round struggles to a lapse in concentration, stating the fight felt ‘too easy’ initially.

This victory, which served as an IBF light heavyweight title eliminator, places Whittaker in line for a potential world title shot, potentially against Dmitrii Bivol. Due to the close finish, promoter Eddie Hearn suggested Whittaker may require another fight, possibly a rematch with Wallace, before moving to a world title challenge.

Other results from the Matchroom Boxing card included Bilal Fawaz defending his British and Commonwealth junior middleweight titles with an eighth-round stoppage of Eithan James, and Hamza Uddin claiming the British flyweight title by stopping Sean Bruce in the eighth round.
