By early August, Mikaelian chose to pursue a unification fight with Ring Magazine champion Jai Opetaia, prompting the WBC to consider stripping him of its title.

Following the collapse of the Mikaelian talks due to Mikaelian signing with Zuffa Boxing, Benavidez is reportedly targeting a December 12, 2026, return to the ring against interim WBC cruiserweight champion Michal Cieslak. This bout is expected to take place in Phoenix, Arizona.

In late August, Jose Benavidez Sr. signaled a shift in strategy by proposing a potential cruiserweight matchup between David Benavidez and former IBF champion Jai Opetaia for May 2027, specifically targeting Cinco de Mayo weekend. Benavidez Sr. has reportedly reached out to Turki Alalshikh and attempted to contact Opetaia’s representatives via Instagram to initiate discussions. However, a significant hurdle remains the promotional divide, as Opetaia also recently joined Zuffa Boxing, a move the Benavidez camp has previously objected to.
