Heading into the match, both teams held perfect records. Benfica, managed by Marco Silva, had secured wins against AC Milan (2-0) and Celtic (4-1), while Omonia had won their first two matches against Celta Vigo (1-0) and NK Celje (3-0) without conceding a goal. Despite facing an injury crisis that sidelined players such as Enzo Barrenechea and Jhon Duran, Silva opted to start Argentine midfielder Claudio Echeverri due to his “recent progress and personality.” During the encounter, the match opened with an own goal by Omonia's Loic Nego in the 14th minute. Omonia managed to equalize through Kakoulli in the 42nd minute. However, Benfica responded with a strong second-half performance, scoring through Pavlidis in the 49th minute, followed by Aursnes in the 76th minute and Prestianni in the 85th minute to seal the win. This victory marks a historic milestone for Benfica, representing the first time in the club’s history they have won the first three matches of a European competition league or group phase. Following this third consecutive victory, Benfica sits at the top of the Europa League standings with nine points, tied with Bayer Leverkusen and other teams in a five-way tie, leading on goal difference. Omonia suffered their first defeat of the competition and sits in 11th place. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-22: Europa League Matchday 3 results and standings Bournemouth defeated Milan 3-0 and Benfica beat Omonia 4-1 in Europa League Matchday 3.
