The Benfica District project, a €220 million redevelopment plan for the area surrounding Estádio da Luz, is currently undergoing review by the Lisbon City Council. The proposal includes constructing a 10,000-capacity multi-use pavilion, new commercial spaces, athlete accommodation, and a €75 million renovation of the stadium facade, with a goal to complete the project by mid-2029.

Following claims by a former communications director that the project had been rejected, Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas clarified that the initiative has not been blocked. Moedas stated that the project is simply following “standard urban planning procedures” and emphasized its importance to the city, despite political criticism regarding the timing of official support.
