The Berlin Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment has initiated the ‘Berlin WC Cooperation Program’. This pilot project, scheduled to run until the end of 2027, aims to increase the availability of public restrooms by utilizing existing private infrastructure.

Under the program, private businesses including cafes, restaurants, and shops can offer their restrooms to the public free of charge without requiring a purchase. In return, participating businesses receive a flat-rate expense allowance from the state of Berlin. 

To assist citizens, participating locations display a window sticker indicating specific features such as whether facilities are unisex, gender-separated, barrier-free, or equipped with changing tables. Active partners can be identified via the ‘Berliner Toilette’ app, the official project website, or the Berlin Geoportal.
