Physicists using the Beijing Spectrometer III (BES III) experiment in China have reported strong evidence for the existence of glueballs, which are exotic subatomic particles composed almost entirely of gluons rather than quarks.

Researchers focused their analysis on the X(2370) particle, which was first observed in 2011. By studying approximately 10 billion J/ψ or charmonium decays, the team determined that the particle’s mass and quantum numbers align with theoretical predictions for the lightest pseudoscalar glueball. 

A critical component of the finding is the absence of specific decay patterns. While a particle containing quarks would be expected to decay into K*(892) mesons and antikaons, researchers found no evidence of this occurring. This lack of decay supports the theory that X(2370) is a ‘flavor singlet’ and a purely gluon-based state, providing experimental validation for long-standing predictions within quantum chromodynamics.
