In September 2026, the BMC launched a massive urban greening drive under the National Clean Air Programme, aiming to plant 100,000 saplings. This effort includes the use of the Japanese Miyawaki afforestation method to establish dense green belts in urban spaces. By October 2026, the focus expanded to include waste management through the Odisha government’s Rural-Urban Convergence initiative. The BMC extended its dry waste collection and recycling operations to 31 Gram Panchayats. While the corporation has awarded contracts for mechanized road cleaning, challenges remain regarding urban sanitation, specifically concerning open garbage dumps and waste burning along the Daya West Canal. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-03: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation expands waste management to 31 Gram Panchayats The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation is expanding dry waste management to 31 Gram Panchayats, even as the city faces ongoing challenges with open dumping and pollution in areas like the Daya West Canal. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/bhubaneswar-municipal-corporation-expands-waste-management-to-31-gram-panchayats ### 2026-09-05: Bhubaneswar launches massive urban plantation and greening drive Bhubaneswar is launching an ambitious urban greening campaign, targeting 100,000 saplings and 15 Miyawaki forests to combat air pollution and improve city sustainability. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/bhubaneswar-launches-massive-urban-plantation-and-greening-drive --- Cite as: Bhubaneswar urban environmental and sanitation initiatives.
